COLUMBUS, Ohio — UTSA opened play at the NCAA Central Regional on Thursday with a 317 (+29) and the Roadrunners are in 18th place after the first round of play at The Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course (par 72/6,264 yards).
Sophomore Taylor Newlin led UTSA with a five-over-par 77 that included birdies on Nos. 4, 9 and 16. One stroke behind is senior Summer Batiste, who notched a pair of birdies en route to a 78 on the first 18 holes.
Meanwhile, junior Paola Valerio carded an 80 after shooting four-over-par on both the front and back nine, while Southland Conference Player of the Year Fabiola Arriaga fired an 82. Senior Shannon Jungman rounded out the Roadrunners' scoring with an 87.
Southern California, the regional’s top seed, sits atop the leaderboard with a 298 (+10), while Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex fired a two-under-par 70 to lead the individual standings.
UTSA is just two shots behind Michigan and Harvard and three strokes ahead of I-35 rival Texas State.
The three-day event continues on Friday.
