Fox named Southland Conference Indoor Coach of the Year

FRISCO — UTSA head men’s track & field coach Aaron Fox was named the Southland Conference Indoor Coach of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday. It is the second consecutive year that Fox has earned the conference’s end-of-season honor.

The fifth-year coach (seventh at UTSA overall) led the Roadrunners to their second SLC Indoor Championship in a row last weekend in Houston. Behind individual titles from senior Larry Brooks (800 meters), sophomore Gaston Griffin (400 meters) and junior Will Vese (60-meter hurdles), UTSA successfully defended its title by scoring 114.5 points — their second-most at a conference indoor meet in school history — and easily outdistanced Texas-Arlington, which finished in second place with 98 points.

It was a little more than a year ago that Fox led the Roadrunners to their first-ever SLC Indoor Championship behind individual titles from senior All-American Brandon Buteaux (heptathlon) and sophomore Mthobisi Baloyi (800 meters). In a tight team race that came down to the final event, UTSA scored 111 points to edge Sam Houston State (104.33) and defending champion Stephen F. Austin (103).

The Roadrunners are back in action next weekend when they will compete at various last chance meets in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships , which will take place March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
