Freshman Paola Valerio stands in fifth place after her opening day scorecard of 143.
SORRENTO, Fla. – UTSA freshman Paola Valerio recorded scores of 68 and 75 on Monday in her UTSA debut and she stands in fifth place at The UCF Challange with an two-round total of 143.
Valerio racked up seven birdies, including four on the back nine, in her first round as a Roadrunner. The Mexico City, Mexico, native then added four more in the following round and she is three strokes behind tournament leader Julia Boland of Texas A&M.
"We left some shots on the course today and I think we are capable of much more," head coach Carrie Cole said. "We are close to everything coming together and, although the results are not great, we are making big strides toward our future. I'm very proud of how Paola played in her first tournament and am looking forward to improving on the experience we had today."
Senior Shelly Martinez turned in rounds of 77 and 75 for a 152 total, while sophomore Summer Batiste capped off her day with 161 talliy. Sophomore Shannon Jungman closed out her two rounds one stroke behind Batiste.
The Roadrunners stand in 15th place in the team standings with a 616 (307-309). Meanwhile, Georgia State sits atop the leaderboard with a 591 and is seven strokes ahead of second-place Texas A&M.
The final round begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
