Sophomore Summer Batiste sits in second place in the individual standings.
FLORENCE, Ariz. – Sophomore Summer Batiste turned in a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday and the UTSA women's golf team fired a school-record, second-round 296 to remain atop the team standings at the Northern Migration Invitational.
The Roadrunners, who opened with a program-best 298 on Monday, improved on that mark by two strokes and maintained their one-shot lead over Idaho.
Batiste began her day tied for seventh, but with the aid of four birdies, jumped five spots in the individual standings after her career-low round. Meanwhile, senior Shelly Martinez moved up 46 positions with a personal-record 68 and now is tied for fifth place at 147. The Pecos native registered the lowest round on the day on the strength of five birdies. Freshman Paola Valerio and sophomores Shannon Jungman and Bruna Spengler have registered two-round scorecards of 155 and are tied for 35th.
“Today was another record-breaking score for our team,” head coach Carrie Cole said. “I am extremely proud of Summer and Shelly (Martinez). The conditions were very tough from the start and they both played their best rounds. Shannon also started off rough, but she really held it together to salvage her round. Overall, we are in a great spot and are looking forward to the challenge tomorrow.”
Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro sits atop the individual standings with a two-day total of 138. Batiste and East Tennessee State's Sinead O’Sullivan trail her by five shots.
UTSA will look for its second team title in program history on Wednesday.
