HUNTSVILLE — Led by freshman Paola Valerio's one-under-par 70, the UTSA women’s golf team moved into fourth place on Tuesday at the Southland Conference Championships with the second-best round of the day, a school-record 289.
“Today was much better,” head coach Carrie Cole said. “We had a tough practice after yesterday’s round and it paid off. We still have a lot of work to do to reach our goal, but we will leave everything we have on the course tomorrow.”
Sam Houston State remained atop the team leaderboard after shooting a 293 and the Bearkats will head into Wednesday's final round with a 10-stroke advantage over Central Arkansas.
Valerio moved into the top 10 of the individual standings with her 70 and the Mexico City native has a two-round score of 147. She knocked in five birdies on the day, including consecutive birds on at the par 4 15th and 16th holes.
Sophomore Shannon Jungman also stands in the top 10, as she is tied for ninth with a two-day total of 149 (74-75). Meanwhile, sophomore Summer Batiste and senior Shelly Martinez are tied for 12th with scorecards of 150.
UCA’s Rebecca Sorensen leads all players after two rounds with a 140 (70-70) and she will take a two-shot edge over Sam Houston State’s Kristen Spittler into Wednesday’s final round.
