VAIL, Colo. — Junior Paola Valerio turned in a two-under-par 70 on Wednesday, one of the best rounds of the tournament, and sophomore Fabiola Arriaga tied for eighth place at this week's Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Roadrunners battled stiff winds for the second consecutive day and shot a 312 in the final round for a three-day total of 930 (304-314-312), which was good for 12th in the 18-team field.
Only two players posted a better round than Valerio’s final 18 holes on Wednesday. The Mexico City native fired a team-high six birdies and recorded the lowest round of any UTSA player this fall to jump to a tie for 16th with a 226 (78-78-70). She opened the round with a birdie on No. 11 and reached three-under-par twice on the day.
Arriaga recorded the second top-10 finish of her career with a 224 (74-74-76), which was good for an eighth-place tie. Like Valerio, she started the day with a birdie on No. 11 and closed the round with a bird on No. 10. With five birdies in the round, Arriaga carded a total of 10 for the event to match Valerio’s output.
Senior Summer Batiste finished 72nd (75-81-86=242), sophomore Taylor Newlin tied for 81st (88-81-80=249) and senior Bruna Spengler finished 84th (77-88-86=251).
Oklahoma used a final round 291 to vault to the top of the team leaderboard with a 54-hole score of 899 (301-307-291). The Sooners were led by Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who took home individual medalist honors with a 217 (70-75-72).
UTSA will return to the links on Oct. 16 for the Suzie Maxwell Berning Classic. The three-day tournament will be played in Norman, Okla.
