SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s golf team received its 2011 Southland Conference Championship rings in a ceremony at Briggs Ranch Golf Club on Wednesday evening.
Following a round on the links with members of the "UTSA 24" booster club, the men’s and women’s team gathered to celebrate the Roadrunners' record-breaking season.
Led by Southland Freshman of the Year Fabiola Arriaga, UTSA earned its first-ever berth to an NCAA Regional after winning the conference tournament by seven strokes. Arriaga sunk a 30-foot putt to tie for first and force a playoff for the individual crown. In all, four players finished in the top five, including Southland Player of the Year Paola Valerio.
After dominant performances all season, a record four players were named to the all-league teams. Both Arriaga and Valerio earned first-team honors, while Summer Batiste and Taylor Newlin garnered second-team accolades. Meanwhile, head coach Carrie Parnaby was named the circuit's Coach of the Year.
UTSA hits the course for the first time this fall on Saturday when it plays at the three-day Texas A&M “Mo”Morial in College Station.
