UTSA wins pair of gold medals at Friday's Howie Ryan Invitational

HOUSTON — UTSA collected a pair of gold medals and registered two other top-three finishes at Friday's Howie Ryan Invitational, which was the team's final tune-up for this year's Conference USA Indoor Championships.

Leading the way was Stephanie Wangui, who won the 800 meters in 2:14.47 and she also placed third in the mile with a time of 5:00.88.

Meanwhile, the 1,600m relay team of Paige Patterson, Evelyn Clark, Jennifer Arinze and Sierra Andres also was victorious after passing the baton in 3:49.35.

The Roadrunners' distance medley relay quartet of Charlette Janicek, Rachael Grossman, Emily Voss and Vanessa Lerma raced to a bronze medal in a time of 12:55.61.

Tameyah Carroll crossed the finish line fourth in the 60m hurdles in 8.86, but that was second among collegians in the eight-woman field. She also recorded times of 8.86 and 8.93 in the semifinals and preliminary heats, respectively.

Elesha Alyn placed fifth in the triple jump with a measurement of 39-5 (12.01m) and that ranks fourth on the program's all-time performers list.

"This was a great final tune-up before the Conference USA meet," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox said. "We are making the right steps towards a great performance in two weeks."

"This meet gave me outstanding confidence," said De'Stini Henderson, who clocked times of 7.66 and 7.78 in the 60m dash. "I'm eager to surprise a lot of people at the Conference USA Championships."

UTSA will take next weekend off before competing at the league's indoor meet from Feb. 24-25 in Birmingham, Ala.
