SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey announced Monday that she has named Summer Batiste as head women's golf coach.
Batiste replaces Carrie Parnaby, who stepped away in April after leading the program for nine seasons, and her appointment is effective immediately pending a criminal background check.
"After a national search we are very pleased to offer the position of head women's golf coach to our current assistant coach, Summer Batiste," Hickey said. "Summer has given UTSA years of service as both a student-athlete and a coach. Her professional growth has been outstanding, and we have confidence that she is prepared to take this next step.
A former all-conference performer for the Roadrunners, Batiste was an assistant coach under Parnaby for the past three seasons after serving the previous year as a volunteer assistant coach. During her tenure, UTSA has won three tournament titles, registered eight additional top-five finishes and earned six all-conference certificates.
"I want to thank Lynn Hickey and the UTSA administration for giving me the opportunity to lead the women's golf program," Batiste said. "We have a strong foundation with success on and off the course, and a tremendous amount of support throughout the San Antonio golf community. It is a true honor to continue coaching such a great group of ladies who love to compete and represent UTSA with class. I'm excited for the future of our program and UTSA Athletics."
Last season, Batiste helped guide the Roadrunners to four top-five finishes. UTSA won the Texas State Invitational, finished second at the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational, claimed third at the Conference USA Championship, the program's 10th straight top-four league finish, and took fifth at the BYU at Entrada Classic. Nikki Long and Aimee Ponte garnered second-team all-conference honors, while Julie Houston was named to the third team.
In 2015-16, Batiste helped lead UTSA to five top fives, including the Islanders Classic team title and a fourth-place effort at the C-USA Championship. Houston, who was named C-USA Freshman of the Year and second-team all-conference, became the first Roadrunner to win back-to-back tournaments when she came out on top at the All There August Challenge and Islanders Classic in February. Long also was named second-team all-conference.
Batiste helped guide a young squad to four top-10 finishes in 2014-15, including a pair of third-place efforts in the final month of the campaign. Led by a sixth-place showing from Ponte and a tie for seventh by Long, the Roadrunners claimed the bronze at the C-USA Championship. Brogan Townend earned third-team all-conference accolades for the second consecutive year.
Prior to her time as an an assistant coach, Batiste was an assistant golf professional at San Antonio Country Club.
Batiste was a four-year letterwinner from 2007-12 and served as team captain her final two seasons. She earned second-team All-Southland Conference honors in both 2010 and 2011. She shared individual medalist honors with teammate Taylor Newlin at the 2012 Islander Classic after shooting a 75-74-71—220 and she posted four additional top-five finishes during her career. Batiste was a three-time winner of the UTSA Weight Room Warrior Award and her career scoring average of 77.64 ranks fourth on UTSA's all-time list.
A native of Spring, Batiste was a four-year letterwinner at Klein Collins High School, where she was a three-time medalist and the district runner-up and an eighth-place finisher at regionals as a senior.
Batiste, the daughter of former Texas A&M and Miami Dolphins football player Dana Batiste, earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from UTSA in May 2012.
She married Ivan Henry in June 2017.
"Summer had led our recruiting efforts the past two years and has developed wonderful relationships throughout the golf community in San Antonio," Hickey said. "We are excited to have Summer to be our next head coach, and it is even more meaningful to be able to move our program forward with one of our own Roadrunners at the helm."
