Chatham, Douglas grab gold at season-opening at Ted Nelson Invitational

COLLEGE STATION — Luca Chatham won the mile and Andre Douglas claimed top honors in the triple jump to highlight action for the UTSA track & field teams at the Ted Nelson Invitational on Saturday at Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium.

Chatham and Douglas led a quintet of podium finishes to help lead the UTSA men to fourth place in the team standings.

Meanwhile, the distance medley relay team of Colleen Gilbert, Creshaun Cresser, Stephanie Sauceda and Amber Boyd finished third with a time of 12:33.56 to help lead the women to seventh place.

Chatham clocked a 4:10.82 to just beat Abilene Christian's Ryan Cleary (4:10.97) to the line and secure the first win of the season for the Roadrunners. The senior from Dallas moved into the No. 3 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list in the mile with his new personal best.

Douglas skipped to the first win of his sophomore season with a mark of 15.44 meters (50-8). That effort helped him finish nearly a foot in front of Texas A&M's CJ Stevenson (15.14/49-8 ¼).

Chatham also helped the distance medley relay team to a runner-up finish. Running leadoff leg, he joined Chris Rosales, Zack Kovar and Monty Bertschy for a time of 10:12.61.

Vincent Perez turned in a career performance in the weight throw. The senior from San Antonio Marshall High School measured 18.11 meters (59-5) to secure the silver medal and move into the fourth spot on the program's all-time performers lst.

Vasha Sheriff turned in the Roadrunners other podium finish after he finished second in the 400m with a 47.41 clocking.

The women got a trio of fourth-place finishes on the track.

Sierra Andres clocked a 57.61 for fourth in the 400m, while Olivia Esemena timed a 7.59 for the same placing in the 60m. Jamiah Jackson also took fourth in the 60m hurdles with an 8.64.

The UTSA pole vault crew saw three athletes move into the top five on the Roadrunners' performers list

Gary Haasbroek finished eighth with a clearance of 4.88m (16-0) to leap into fifth on the men's list.

In the women's competition, Caroline Bellows and Alexandria Gray both topped 3.59m (11-9 ¼) to finish seventh and 11th, respectively, and move into a tie for fourth on UTSA's all-time performers list.

The UTSA men tallied 75 points for fourth place in the eight-team field, seven points ahead of Texas and 24 better than Texas State.

The women scored 20.5 points for seventh, four points ahead of UT Arlington and 10.5 behind Abilene Christian.

Texas A&M swept both teams titles.

The Roadrunners will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 19, at the FasTrak Invitational in Houston.
