SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams won five events on the final day of the UTSA Invitational on Saturday at Park West Athletics Complex.
Four of the gold-medal performances came on the men's side. Luca Chatham claimed top honors in the 1,500 meters, Caleb Devereaux was the top collegiate finisher in the 800m, Andre Douglas skipped to the triple jump crown and Patrick Prince raced to gold in the 110m hurdles to lead the men.
Meanwhile, Caroline Bellows was the top collegian in the pole vault and eight other Roadrunners finished on the podium for the women during the two-day meet. The senior from George West cleared 3.65 meters (11-11 ¾) for second overall behind unattached Tiziana Ruiz Dominguez.
Douglas got the final day off to a good start for the men by leading the triple jump wire to wire. The sophomore from Jamaica posted his best jump — a mark of 15.44 meters (50-8) — on his fourth attempt and his five measured leaps were longer than all other jumps turned in by the rest of the field.
In afternoon action on the track, Prince sped to gold in the 110m hurdles in a time of 13.98 seconds. The senior All-American from Conroe won the event at this meet for the third straight year by finishing ahead of Kentucky's Tai Brown (14.26).
In the 800m, Devereaux crossed second overall behind Robert Downs, who ran unattached, and was the top collegian with a time of 1:54.42.
Chatham used a strong finishing kick, catching several runners over the final 300 meters to break the tape first in the 1,500m. The senior from Dallas, who won the Conference USA Indoor mile last month, clocked a personal-best time of 4:00.54, bettering his previous PR of 4:07.43 by nearly seven seconds.
The UTSA men received nine top-three finishes in addition to their four wins with seven of the podium appearances coming on Saturday.
Jamal Anderson picked up a silver medal in the triple jump with a mark of 14.02m (46-0), while Davante Edwards cleared 2.02m (6-7 ½) for runner-up honors in the high jump.
On the track, Kaleb Campbell raced to a new PR in the 100m, crossing second with a time of 10.67.
Andrew Pirog and Justin Gerbrecht finished 2-3 in the 400m hurdles, as Pirog clocked a 54.88 and Gerbrecht circled in 54.23.
The 4x400m relay squad of Vasha Sheriff, Chris Rosales, Austin Crocker and Pirog passed the baton to a silver medal with a time of 3:14.79, while Zack Kovar took third in the 800m in 1:58.27.
In other Saturday field-event action for the women, Briana Washington leaped to a third-place mark of 5.49m (18-0 ¼) in the long jump, while Lacee Barnes placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 46.39m (152-2).
In the running events, Vera Chinedu finished second in the 100m in 12.09 and took fifth in the 200m with a 24.76 clocking, while Olivia Esemena crossed fourth in both sprints with times of 12.11 and 24.76, respectively.
Brooke Lomax secured silver in the 800m in 2:16.44 and later helped the 4x400m relay team, which also included Sierra Andres, Orla Brothers and Rian Rodriguez, to third place in 3:59.38.
Erin Wilson grabbed the bronze in the 400m with a 55.56 clocking and Brothers took third in the 400m hurdles, circling in 1:00.12.
UTSA will host the Roadrunner Invitational next Thursday-Saturday, March 21-23, at Park West Athletics Complex. The Roadrunners will welcome Akron, James Madison, Oklahoma, Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State and UTRGV to the Alamo City for their second straight home meet.
