SAN ANTONIO – After securing 18 wins last weekend in the indoor season opener in Houston, UTSA track & field hits the road for the Ted Nelson Invitational on Friday and Saturday, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, at the McFerrin Athletic Center. The event will start on Friday with distance races at 5 p.m., with field events kicking off at noon on Saturday, with Saturday's events broadcast live on SEC Network+.
In its season-opening meet in Houston last weekend, the Roadrunners racked up 18 wins, including 10 from the women. Maia Campbell swept the throws events and Mikael Dawkins was the top collegiate finisher in a pair of races.
UTSA is joined at the Ted Nelson Invite by Abilene Christian, Barton County CC, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Kentucky, McNeese State, North Texas, Northwestern (LA), Prairie View A&M, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas Southern, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, UT Arlington, UTRGV, UT-Tyler and Western Texas College.
Junior Andre Douglas, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, won the triple jump with a mark of 15.40m (50-6.25) to earn Conference USA Field Athlete of the Week accolades on Tuesday.
Bashiru Abdullahi won the 60-m hurdle prelims, Grant Szalek claimed top honors in the high jump, Jack Tuner claimed the long jump and Jorge Ayala posted a win in the shot put.
Maren Wilms claimed a win in the 60m hurdles for the women, with Ingeborg Guenwald winning the long jump and Spence claiming the triple jump. Campbell claimed top honors in the shot put and weight throw.
The Roadrunners are under the leadership of Aaron Fox, a fixture with UTSA track & field for two decades and who is in his 12thyear as Director of Track & field/Cross Country. Fox is assisted by associate head coach Kareem Streete-Thompson (sprints/jumps/relays), recruiting coordinator Chris Adams (throws), David Hartman (cross country/distance), Michael McPherson (pole vault/multis/jumps) and Jackie Richards (400m/hurdles/relays).
Helping pace the Roadrunners are junior Danielle Spence, the defending Conference USA Indoor triple jump champion, and Gary Haasbroek, the league's reigning heptathlon titleholder and 2019 C-USA Indoor Freshman of the Meet. Spence and Haasbroek, the school record-holders in their respective events, both collected second-team All-America honors at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
