Roadrunners to open indoor campaign Saturday at FasTrak Collegiate

SAN ANTONIO —The UTSA track & field teams will open the indoor campaign this Saturday, Jan. 11, when they travel to Houston for the FasTrak Collegiate at Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse.

The meet will get underway at 10 a.m. starting with the shot put, high jump and long jump. Track events are scheduled to start at noon beginning with the mile run. Live results can be found online at results.fttiming.com/meets/5073

This will mark the second straight year that UTSA has competed in an event hosted by FasTrak Athletix. Last January, the Roadrunners won nine events at the FasTrak Invitational, also held at Yeoman Fieldhouse.

The UTSA men captured five gold medals at that meet. Andre Douglas, a junior from Jamaica, won the triple jump with a 51-1 ¾ mark and Gary Haasbroek, a sophomore from Australia, leaped 24-9 ¼ to claim top honors in the long jump, while Desmond Jefferson (400 meters), Vincent Perez (weight throw) and Patrick Prince (60m hurdles) also collected wins.

The women picked up four victories at the 2019 FasTrak Invitational. Orla Brothers, a sophomore from England, crossed first in the 400m and anchored the 4xs400m relay team to gold, while Charlette Janicek (3,000m) and Gabriyella Torres (long jump) also took the top spot on the medal stand a year ago.

The Roadrunners are under the direction of Aaron Fox, a fixture with UTSA for two decades who is in his 12thyear as Director of Track & field/Cross Country. A four-time All-America decathlete at Texas, he has led UTSA to 155 league titles and more than 30 All-America certificates. Fox is assisted by associate head coach Kareem Streete-Thompson (sprints/jumps/relays), recruiting coordinator Chris Adams (throws), David Hartman (cross country/distance), Michael McPherson (pole vault/multis/jumps) and Jackie Richards (400m/hurdles/relays).

Leading the way in 2020 are junior Danielle Spence, the defending Conference USA Indoor triple jump champion, and Haasbroek, the league's reigning heptathlon titleholder and 2019 C-USA Indoor Freshman of the Meet. Spence and Haasbroek, the school record-holders in their respective events, both collected second-team All-America honors at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
