UTSA repeats as Texas State Invitational team champion

KYLE, Texas — Behind individual medalist Hannah Holzmann, the UTSA women's golf team repeated as the Texas State Invitational team champion on Tuesday at Plum Creek Golf Course (par 72/6,290 yards).

Led by a 2-under-par 70 from Holzmann, the Roadrunners posted a 297 in the final round in cold and wet conditions for their second straight title at the event and their fifth tournament win under third-year head coach Summer Batiste. UTSA and Sam Houston State finished in a deadlock atop the leaderboard, as each team posted an 896, three shots ahead of third-place Texas State, but the Roadrunners were declared team champions by virtue of having a lower fifth score in each team's lineup for the final round.

"This was a great way to start our spring season, especially with how we battled back to win in some tough conditions today," Batiste said. "I'm really proud of the way everyone competed and stayed focused throughout both days."

Holzmann collected her first collegiate win by firing a 3-under 213, finishing six shots ahead of runners-up Madigan Murray of UT Arlington and Hanna Alberto of Sam Houston State. After opening with a 74 on Monday, the sophomore from San Antonio carded a 3-under 69 in her second round, which spanned two days due to darkness. She wrote down four birdies over her second 18 holes and then added five more as part of a 2-under 70 in the final round.

"I'm so proud of Hannah," said Batiste, the two-time reigning Conference USA Coach of the Year. "She played awesome all week, especially in the final two rounds. It's gratifying to see all of her hard work pay off with her first win as a Roadrunner."

Holzmann recorded a tournament-best 12 birdies and led the field in par-4 scoring (-1) in bettering her previous collegiate-best finish of second, which came in her UTSA debut at the 2018 Lady Maxwell Invitational. Her win is the fourth individual crown in the Batiste era and the 16th in program history.

Nicole Polivchak also finished in the top 10 to help the Roadrunners to their 13th team title in the 15-year history of the program. The junior tied for ninth place with a 225 that included a 1-under 71 in the first round, followed by a 79 and a 75.

Ana Gonzalez shared 24th place with a 230. The junior from Mexico carded rounds of 76,77 and 77 while registering seven birdies and one of only four eagles in the field with a three on the par-5 11th hole in the final round.

Madison Kidd finished one shot behind Gonzalez in a tie for 28th with a 231. The senior from Lake Jackson posted rounds of 77, 76 and 78 on the strength of a team-best 36 pars. Her 78 in the final round proved to be the deciding score for the team title, as Sam Houston State's fifth-best score was a 79.

Camryn Carreon tied for 31st with a 233. The freshman from San Antonio bounced back from a 77-81—158 for the first 36 holes with a 3-over 75 in a final round that was buoyed by three birdies, all on the back nine.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Feb. 24-25 when they travel to The Woodlands, Texas, for the ICON Invitational.
