SAN MARCOS, Texas – Nine runs in two innings pushed the Roadrunners past Saint Louis, 9-2 Sunday afternoon.
Through the first four innings, the Billikens had three hits and left five runners on base, while UTSA recorded four hits and left four on.
In the fifth, Saint Louis got on the board first with a two-run homer to left field. In the bottom of the frame, Celeste Loughman doubled down the left line with two outs on the board. Madison Washington was walked and Kindell Brooks followed with a single as Loughman scored. Riley Grunberg reached on an error as runners advanced. Freshman Taylor Medina stepped up and singled to shortstop as Ciarra Mata (pinch runner) scored her first career run as UTSA tied the game. With bases loaded, Victoria Villarreal doubled to left-center as Medina, Grunberg and Brooks scored to take the lead, 5-2.
The Roadrunners added four more runs in the sixth to take the game. With one out, Paige Pacher and Loughman had back-to-back walks. Washington hit a three-run homer down the right line to increase the lead to six (8-2). Brooks followed with a solo homer to left center as the Roadrunners led 9-2. A fly out and a ground out closed the inning.
In the seventh, the Billikens left one on to end the game.
Makenzie Carpenter improves to 2-0 on the season, while Clarissa Hernandez picked up the save. Carpenter pitched 5.0 innings with two strikeouts.
UTSA recorded 10 hits on the game.
The Roadrunners return to action Feb. 21-23 at the Boerner invitation in Arlington, Texas hosted by UT Arlington.
