UTSA adds Josh Adkins to signing class

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor announced Wednesday that he has added former Smithson Valley High School and New Mexico State quarterback Josh Adkins to his 2020 signing class. 
 
Adkins signed a financial aid agreement on Wednesday and will join the Roadrunners after he earns his undergraduate degree from New Mexico State this summer. He will be immediately eligible to play this fall and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
 
The addition of Adkins pushes the 2020 signing class total to 18, as nine inked during the early signing period in December and eight more signed on Feb. 5. 
 
Traylor's first signing class now features 16 players form the state of Texas, along with one each from California and iowa. 
 
Of the 16 players from the Lone Star State, five are from the Greater Houston Area, four hail from the San Antonio area, three come from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, two are from East Texas and one each are from Central Texas and El Paso.
 
The early signing class includes 10 offensive players, six who are projected for the defensive side of the ball, one athlete and one specialist.
 
After redshirting in 2017, Adkins started 22 games at QB for New Mexico State over the past two seasons. Adkins threw for 5,151 yards and 27 touchdowns on 497-of-830 passing during his two-year career in Las Cruces.
 
As a redshirt sophomore in 2019, Adkins started all 12 contests and completed 275 of 437 passes (62.9%) for 2,588 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. He topped the 300-yard mark twice, including throwing for a season-high 335 and three TDs on 30-of-47 passing at New Mexico and tossing for 316 and a pair of scores on a 28-of-38 effort through the air versus UIW. He completed 71.4% (25-35) against Mississippi, was 28 of 42 (66.7%) for 221 yards at Washington State and converted 19 of 30 attempts (63.3%) at Alabama.
 
Adkins played in 10 games and drew eight starts under center in 2018. He completed 222 of 393 passes for 2,563 yards and 13 touchdowns and also rushed for 117 yards. He eclipsed the 300-yard passing mark in three of his eight starts and averaged 256 passing yards per game. In his second career start, he converted on 34-of-51 passes for 402 yards and four touchdowns in a home win against Liberty. His most efficient game of the 2018 season came in a home victory versus Alcorn State, as he was 32 of 44 for 396 yards and four touchdowns. 
 
A three-year starter at San Antonio area prep powerhouse Smithson Valley for head coach Larry Hill, Adkins threw for a program-leading 6,831 yards and 66 passing touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,177 yards and 34 TDs during his career. He set a single-season record with 2,985 passing yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior. Adkins was named the San Antonio Sports All Star Football Game MVP, San Antonio Express-News Area Offensive Player of the Year and District 27-6A Offensive Player of the Year following his senior season in 2016. He was a second-team all-area as a junior and first-team all-district as a sophomore.
