SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox on Tuesday announced that the program has signed Ireland U20 record-holder Sam Healy. The transfer from UL-Monroe will join the Roadrunners beginning with the 2021 track & field season.
A native of Carrigaline, Ireland, Healy set U20 records in his native country in the indoor 60-meter hurdles (7.89 seconds) and long jump (24-8 ½), as well as the outdoor 110-meter hurdles (14.11). He has captured four indoor national U20 titles — two each in the 60m hurdles and long jump — and three outdoor national U20 crowns — a pair in the long jump and one in the 110m hurdles. A two-time national outdoor U20 champion in the long jump, he also notched a fifth-place finish in the long jump and hurdles at the European Juniors.
Healy competed for the ULM Warhawks for the past two seasons. At the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship, he leaped 24-3 ½ to secure a silver medal in the long jump and he clocked an 8.16 for fourth place in the 60m hurdles. He collected bronze in the long jump at the 2019 Sun Belt Outdoor with a personal-best mark of 25-0.
"Sam Healy is going to be a great addition to the UTSA track & field program," Fox said. "He's excelled in the hurdles and long jump on both the collegiate and international levels, and his wealth of experience is going to help our program immediately."
Prior to his time at ULM, Healy competed for University College Cork, where he placed second in varsity long jump events both as a freshman and sophomore. An excellent all-around athlete, Healy also played rugby and soccer during his prep career.
Healy is the third member of UTSA's current signing class, joining South African distance standout Chante Dixon and Estonian national champion Johanna Soover.
