UTSA earns 15 spots on C-USA Indoor All-Conference Teams

DALLAS — UTSA earned a total of 15 spots on the 2021 Conference USA Indoor Track & Field All-Conference Teams, the league office announced Monday.

The Roadrunners had eight all-conference selections on the men's side and seven on the women's teams, as the all-conference performers were determined based on finishes at the C-USA Indoor Championships on Feb. 20-21 in Birmingham. Individuals placing first in their events were named first team all-conference, those placing second were named second team all-conference and those placing third were named third team all-conference.

Grant Szalek and Jack Turner were named first-team all-conference after winning the men's triple jump and heptathlon, respectively, while the pair also made the third team in the high jump (Szalek) and long jump (Turner). Bashiru Abdullahi (60-meter hurdles), Sam Healy (long jump) and Joel McFarlane (heptathlon) collected second-team accolades and Justin Wright (heptathlon) joined Szalek and Turner on the third team.

For the women, Ingeborg Gruenwald garnered first-team accolades in the long jump and third-team honors in the triple jump, while Abby Balli (mile) and Danielle Spence (triple jump) picked up second-team honors in the mile. Amaya Scott made the third team in the high jump and Alanah Yukich was a third-team selection in the 60m hurdles. Yukich joined Orla Brothers, Faith Roberson and Taylor Armstrong on the third-team 4x400m relay.

The women finished third with 81 points at the C-USA Indoor Championships for the program's highest finish at the meet since a runner-up showing in 2014. The 81 points also marked the most scored in a conference indoor championship since the Roadrunners tallied 116 in finishing second at the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Indoor.

The men scored 90 points to finish third in the team standings at the league indoor meet. It marked the program's seventh straight top-three showing at the C-USA Indoor Championships and its 20th top-three league indoor finish overall.
