UTSA travels to Corpus Christi to take on Islanders

SAN ANTONIO – In the midst of a 11-game road swing, UTSA baseball will wrap up its pre-conference schedule with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, starting on Friday at 6 p.m. at Chapman Field. The series will resume on Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m., with all three games broadcast on the Islanders Digital Network.

UTSA (5-7) is in the midst of an 11-game road swing that saw UTSA travel to face No. 15 LSU last weekend, face a nine-game winning streak from Baylor on Tuesday, before venturing to Corpus to take on the Islanders. UTSA will open its conference schedule with four games at Rice next weekend.

The Roadrunners have hit .292/.377/.458 as a team in 2021 under Coach Pat Hallmark, in his second year leading UTSA. On the mound, UTSA has a 4.61 team ERA with 98 strikeouts and 51 walks in 107.1 innings, holding foes to a .256 average. Defensively, UTSA has fielded .979, throwing out 50 percent of would-be base stealers.

Senior infielder Griffin Paxton has led UTSA with a .378 average through 12 games and just had his streak of 21 straight games reaching base safely – dating back to 2019 – snapped at Baylor on Tuesday. Paxton has belted three doubles and two homers, driving in 11 runs with a .500 on-base percentage.

Junior infielder Joshua Lamb has hit .340 with six doubles, one homer and 10 RBI, with Dylan Rock hitting .327 with four doubles, two homers and nine RBI. Outfielder Ian Bailey has cranked a team-leading four homers with two doubles and a .298 average. Infielder/outfielder Jonathan Tapia has hit .293 with a .380 on-base percentage, while Kyle Bergeron owns a .278 average with a homer and six RBI. Catcher Nick Thornquist has hit .277 with three homers and 10 RBI.

On the mound, UTSA has used Shane Daughety (2-0, 2.50 ERA), Luke Malone (1-1, 2.76 ERA), Reece Easterling (1-0, 3.38 ERA) and Grant Miller (0-1, 10.57 ERA) to start multiple games. John Chomko (0-1, 2.45 ERA), Jay Ward (0-0, 6.75 ERA), Daniel Garza (0-0, 3.86 ERA) and Hunter Mason (1-2, 4.82 ERA) have each worked at least four games in relief.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-11, 0-3 Southland) comes into the series riding a 10-game losing streak after a series sweep at McNeese last weekend to open Southland Conference play. The Islanders have played several strong foes during the streak, including No. 10 Texas Tech, Rice and No. 13 TCU in the Shriner's Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park on March 5-7. TAMU-CC also fell at No. 19 Texas and in three of four games at Houston after opening the year with a sweep of Central Michigan at Chapman Field.

TAMU-CC has hit .241 as a team in 2021 with 13 homers and 61 runs scored in 15 games. The Islanders have a 7.20 team ERA with 133 strikeouts in 125 innings, walking 80.
