SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will host the Roadrunner Invitational on Thursday-Saturday, April 15-17, at Park West Athletics Complex. No spectators will be allowed at the meet due to COVID-19 protocols.
Following a one-year hiatus after the 2020 outdoor season was canceled because of the pandemic, the second of two annual home meets will see the Roadrunners compete against athletes from Akron, Grand Canyon, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UIW, UTEP and UTRGV.
The three-day meet will get underway at noon Thursday with the first event — the 100 meters — of the men's decathlon, followed shortly by the women's heptathlon 100m hurdles at 12:30 p.m. The remaining first-day disciplines in those combined events will round out Thursday's action.
On Friday, the heptathlon long jump and decathlon 110m hurdles will kick things off at 10 a.m. Field events are slated to start at 2 p.m. with the women's hammer throw and the men's shot put, while the distance runners will take to the track at 8 p.m. for the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m.
The final day will begin at 11 a.m. with field events, while races are scheduled for 2 p.m.
UTSA won three events at the last Roadrunner Invitational held on March 21-23, 2019.
All-American Danielle Spence posted the longest outdoor triple jump under any weather conditions in UTSA and Park West history with a wind-legal mark of 13.36m (43-10) to win that event, while Orla Brothers crossed first in the 400m hurdles in 1:00.44 to grab the other gold medal for the women.
Jake McDaniel scored 6,648 points to finish first in the decathlon and headline action for the men two years ago. Luca Chatham, who would go on to earn All-America accolades in 2019, posted a runner-up finish in the 800m in 1:51.71, while Justin Wright was second in the decathlon.
The Roadrunners are coming off an impressive showing that saw a trio of school records fall at the Texas A&M Team Invitational last weekend in College Station.
Lacee Barnes broke the UTSA and Cayman Islands national records in the women's discus with a 51.52m (169-0) measurement for third place, while Marilis Remmel took down the UTSA javelin standard with a winning throw of 45.55m (149-5) in her debut on Friday. The following day, Maia Campbell notched her name atop the program's shot put chart with a school-record heave of 15.77m (51-9) for runner-up honors.
Sam Healy (7.62m) and Christie Le Roux (7.48m) finished 1-2 in the men's long jump, while school record-holder Faith Roberson won the women's 400m hurdles with a 58.84 clocking and Abby Balli took top honors in the women's mile in 4:36.99.
