UTSA wins five events on final day of Roadrunner Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Led by a record-setting performance from Bashiru Abdullahi, the UTSA track & field teams won five events on the final day of the Roadrunner Invitational on a windy Saturday at Park West Athletics Complex.

Abdullahi raced to a wind-aided time of 13.61 seconds in cruising to victory in the men's 110-meter hurdles for the second time in two tries this outdoor season. That marked the fastest time recorded under any conditions in school and meet history, bettering Keyunta Hayes' UTSA standard of 13.67 established in 2012 and the Roadrunner Invitational mark of 13.91 set by UTSA's Patrick Prince in 2017. The two-time C-USA medalist in the 60m hurdles improved his previous season best of 13.84 posted in winning the Invitational section at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in March.

Meanwhile, Abby Balli registered her second straight victory in the women's 1,500m with a strong finishing kick. The Pasadena, Texas, native was steadily in second place for the majority of the race and then passed UTEP's Ruth Jerubet in the final 20 meters to cross the finish line first with a time of 4:39.48, just ahead of Jerubet's 4:39.64. The 2021 C-USA Indoor mile runner-up won the 1,500m at last week's Texas A&M Team Invitational with a PR time of 4:36.99.

The Roadrunners turned in a trio of gold-medal performances in the horizontal jumps on Saturday.

Grant Szalek leaped away with the title in the men's triple jump with the best showing of his short UTSA career. The Perth, Australia, native skipped to a collegiate personal-best mark of 15.84 meters (51-11.75) for top honors ahead of Grand Canyon's Paxton Henry (14.52m). The reigning C-USA Indoor triple jump champion now ranks second on UTSA's all-time performers list.

Sam Healy remained undefeated on the outdoor season in the men's long jump with a season-best leap of 7.64m (25-0.75), leading a 1-2 finish by the Roadrunners. The senior from Ireland led the event from wire-to-wire in registering his second win in as many weeks after taking top honors with a 7.62m measurement at the Texas A&M Team Invitational.

Christie Le Roux secured silver in the long jump for the second consecutive meet with a season-best leap of 7.54m (24-9).

In the women's long jump, Oreoluwa Adamson posted her first collegiate win, breaking the sand at a distance of 6.25m (20-6.25). With the top mark of her short collegiate career, the freshman from England moved into the No. 4 position on the program's all-time performers list.

Adamson also paced a 1-2 finish by UTSA jumpers, as 2021 C-USA Indoor champion Ingeborg Gruenwald was second with a 6.20m (20-4.25) effort.

Johanna Soover added to the Roadrunners' haul with a runner-up finish in the women's triple jump. The freshman from Estonia measured 12.13m (39-9.75) to end up just three centimeters shy of the winner Maryam Hassan of Rice.

On the track, Vera Chinedu sped to a windy 11.60 clocking for second place in the women's 100m. The London, England, native bettered her previous personal best in the event of 11.88 posted in March at the Texas Relays while registering her top finish of the season. Chinedu also added a fifth-place showing in the 200m with a PR of 24.55 later in the afternoon.

Taylor Armstrong was the runner-up in the 200m race, as the DeSoto High School product clocked a personal-best time of 24.34 to cross just behind Akron's Amya Clark (24.18).

UTSA posted a 2-3 finish in the 100m hurdles, as Alanah Yukich timed a season best 13.67 for second place, also earning the No. 4 spot on the school's all-time performers list in the event, while Faith Roberson crossed third in 14.26.

In the women's 400m hurdles, Mackenzie Grimes earned the bronze medal with a time of 1:04.34, while Brooke Lomax circled the oval twice in 2:13.80 for third place in the 800m, just shy of her PR of 2:13.32 turned in last weekend. The 4x100m relay team of Adamson, Armstrong, Gruenwald and Chinedu also placed third with a 47.15 clocking.

For the men, Andrew Pirog finished fourth in the 400m hurdles in 52.21, while the 4x1 team of Le Roux, Lirim Emerllahu, Logan Masters and Kaleb Campbell was fifth in 41.94.

Maia Campbell logged her third podium finish of the meet with a third-place finish in the discus. The senior from Converse Judson High School crushed her personal best with a throw of 47.54 meters (156-0), nearly eight meters better than her previous PR of 39.58m posted three years ago. That measurement also moved her into the No. 3 spot on UTSA's all-time performers list in the event.

UTSA record-holder Lacee Barnes was close behind Campbell in fourth place with a throw of 46.89m (153-10). The Grand Cayman native broke the school and Cayman Islands national records last weekend with a 51.52m (169-0) effort at the Texas A&M Team Invitational.

The Roadrunners will return to action next Saturday, April 24, when they travel to Houston for the J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
