UTSA falls to UAB in series opener

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team dropped an 8-5 decision to UAB in the first game of the series Friday night at Roadrunner Field.
 
UAB scored three more runs in the third from a three-run homer to lead 5-0.
 
The Blazers scored another run in the fifth to extend the lead to six (6-0). The Roadrunners scored five runs in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to one. Taylor Medina opened with a walk and Erykah Guerrero followed with a single through the left side. Hannah Boring stepped up and singled to right field as Medina scored to put the Roadrunners on the board. Kat Ibarra also singled to advance Boring. With two runners on, Celeste Loughman reached on an error as runners advanced and Boring and Guerrero scored to trail 6-3. With two outs, Kindell Brooks singled to third and scored Loughman, bridging the gap to one (6-5).
 
In the top of the seventh, UAB scored two more runs to push the lead to three (8-5).
 
UTSA recorded four hits on the day.
 
Jamie Gilbert earned the start, pitching 2.0 games with a strikeout. Alexa Williams came in to pitched the final five inning with three strikeouts.
 
The Roadrunners and the Blazers return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
