UTSA splits doubleheader with UTEP

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with UTEP at Roadrunner Field.
 
Game one
The Roadrunners recorded three two-run homers to upend the Miners 6-0 in game one of the doubleheader.
 
In the first, Celeste Loughman earned a walk with one out on the board. Riley Grunberg stepped up and hit the ball over the left field wall as UTSA took an early 2-0 lead.
 
With one out, Kindell Brooks singled down the left line in the bottom of the second. Brittany Coe hit her fifth home run of the season with a two-run homer to center field to extend the lead to four (4-0).
 
Opening the third, Grunberg earned a walk. Madison Washington hit the third home run of the game towards the scoreboard as Grunberg scored and the Roadrunners led 6-0.
 
In the remaining three innings, UTSA posted a hit and earned a walk.
 
The Roadrunners recorded seven hits on the day, while the Miners had nine and left all on base.
 
Freshman Tatum pitched all seven innings and had a strikeout.
 
Game two
UTSA dropped a 7-2 decision in game two of the day.
 
The Miners were on the board first with two runs in the first. The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Kat Ibarra singled to center field to opening the inning. Celeste Loughman followed with a walk as Ibarra advanced to second. Riley Grunberg singled to left to load the bases. An error by UTEP allowed runners to advance and Ibarra to score (2-1). With runners on second and third, Madison Washington hit a sac fly to center field to score Loughman and tie the game (2-2). A ground out and a flyout ended the inning.
 
In the fourth, the Miners had a solo home run to take a 3-2 lead.
 
UTEP added two more runs in the fifth off a two-run homer and two more runs in the seventh from a home run, a double and a single to clinch the game.
 
UTSA had three hits on the day.
 
Senior Madison Nelson earned the start, pitching four innings and recording three strikeouts. Marena Estell came in for the final three and had three strikeouts.
 
The Roadrunners and the Miner wrap up the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
