NEW YORK — UTSA senior Leroy Watson has earned a spot on the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List, The Friends of John Mackey announced on Friday.
Watson is one of 56 FBS players, including one of three from Conference USA, on the preseason watch list for the Mackey Award, which is awarded annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end. The award recipient is selected by a vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.
A two-year starter for the Roadrunners entering his final campaign, Watson earned honorable mention all-conference accolades in 2020 after catching 14 passes for 176 yards while appearing in all 12 games. The Snellsville, Ga., native averaged 12.6 yards per catch and also was considered one of the top blocking tight ends in the league. Watson had four receptions for 46 yards, including a season long of 26 yards, in the 52-21 victory over UTEP and he was on the receiving end of three passes for a season-best 49 yards at No. 15 BYU. He had two receptions for 26 yards in the 37-25 victory against Middle Tennessee and grabbed a 19-yard pass in the 24-10 win over SFA.
The Mackey Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.
