Roadrunners draw Huskies, wrap up non-conference play

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA soccer concluded the Drury Hotels Invitational on Sunday, as their match with Houston Baptist ended in a 1-1 tie.

Following their 2-1 victory over Lamar Friday night, the Roadrunners and the Huskies match ended in a 1-1 draw. Having concluded their two matches in the Drury Hotels Invitational, UTSA will shift their focus to conference play.

The Roadrunners (5-2-1) found themselves in an early 0-1 hole, as the Huskies (0-5-2) scored in the 16th minute. Following the early Huskie goal, the Roadrunners ramped up the defense and the pressure, as they began working their way back. By halftime, the Roadrunners had twice as many shots (11-5), and twice as many corner kicks. However, the score still sat 0-1 at half.

UTSA's constant pressure paid off in the 61st minute, when Jordan Walker won a header off a goal kick and bounced it to Marlee Fray. Fray then found senior, and Austin native, Ellis Patterson who buried a right-footed strike into the upper-right corner of the net. The assists were Walker's first of her career, and Fray's second assist in two games. The goal was Patterson's 19th career goal, and she is 3rd in the UTSA records for goals scored.

The Roadrunners continued to apply offensive pressure against the Huskies. At the end of regulation, UTSA had 23 shots to HBU's six. However, the two were still tied. Two overtimes and 20 minutes later, the match ended in a tie. UTSA had a game-winning goal by Patterson waved off with 90 seconds remaining in the second overtime due to an offsides call.

UTSA held a 29-6 shot advantage in the match ad also held a 10-4 corner kick lead.

The Roadrunners concluded their non-conference slate with a 5-2-1 record, with the two losses coming at Big 12 schools Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. UTSA owns wins over Tulsa, California Baptist, a 6-1 Grand Canyon squad, and at Texas A&M-Corpus Christ and Lamar.

UTSA will open Conference USA play on Thursday vs. Old Dominion. The match will begin at 7 p.m. That game will be played at the Park West Athletics Complex and will be streamed on Conference USA TV.
