CHOUDRANT, La. — Christian Fanfelle fired a 2-under-par round to lead UTSA on the opening day of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, which teed off Sunday at Squire Creek Country Club (7,105 yards/par 72).
Fanfelle carded a 70 and has a share of eighth place after the first 18 of 54 holes. The all-conference performer from San Antonio used six birdies, including three in a row on Nos. 15-17, en route to recording the Roadrunners' low round of the day. Three of his circled numbers came on par fives and his birdie total was the second-most in the 119-man field. He sits three shots back of day-one leader Kevin Lee of Lamar (-5).
Behind Fanfelle, the Roadrunners are in a tie with Lamar for seventh place in the team standings at 2-over 290. UTSA is only six shots off the pace of 4-under set by Houston with 36 holes left to play.
David Harrison and Jack Wehman are part of a tie for 41st at 1-over par. Harrison, a native of Trophy Club, Texas, wrote down a pair of birdies on each side en route to his 73, while Wehman posted three birdies in his collegiate debut.
Hunter Bott provided UTSA's other counting score with a 2-over 74 that featured four birdies. The Montgomery, Texas, native is in a tie for 54th, while Michael Rome rounds out the UTSA lineup in a 101st (79).
Round two is slated for Monday.
