Roadrunners soar to top of leaderboard on Monday

CHOUDRANT, La. — Led by a 7-under-par round from Hunter Bott, the UTSA men's golf team soared to the top of the leaderboard on Monday at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.

Bott fired a 65 on the par-72, 7,105-yard Squire Creek Country Club layout to help the Roadrunners move from a tie for seventh place after the first round into first place with 18 holes remaining in their season opener. Bott was one of four Roadrunners to turn in a red number in the second round as UTSA posted a 16-under 272, which is tied for the third-best round in school history.

UTSA is sitting at 14-under 562 through 36 holes, three shots ahead of Louisiana Tech (565). LSU (566), Little Rock (567) and Southern Miss (569) round out the top five in the 21-team field.

Bott's 65 featured six birdies and an eagle on the 528-yard, par-5 second hole. His scorecard equals the second-best round in UTSA history, one shot off the school record set by Derek Steinbruck in 1990 and matched by Luke Healy in 2001. The junior from Montgomery has moved into a tie for fourth place in the 119-man field at 5-under 139 after registering his fourth career sub-70 round.

Playing in just his second collegiate round, Jack Wehman carded a 5-under 67 on the strength of seven birdies including four straight on Nos. 11-14 as part of a 32 on the back nine. The Austin native jumped into a share of eighth place at 4-under 140 with 18 holes left to play.

A pair of Roadrunners turned in 2-under-par rounds on Monday. Christian Fanfelle used four birdies, including three on a five-hole stretch in the back, to post his second straight 70 and settle into a tie for eighth at 4-under 140. David Harrison also recorded a 70 behind five birdies and has grabbed a share of 18th place at 1-under 143.

Michael Rome rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 93rd (79-73—152).

The final round is set for Tuesday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 1 beginning at 9:10 a.m.
