Rome paces Roadrunners on opening day of Trinity Forest Invitational

DALLAS — Michael Rome is tied for 13th place and the UTSA men's golf team is in eighth after the first day of the Trinity Forest Invitational, which teed off on Monday at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 71/7,330 yards).
 
Rome is part of a six-way deadlock for 13th at 1-under-par 141, helping the Roadrunners settle into eighth at 7-over 575 with 18 holes remaining. UTSA carded a 5-under 279 in the opening round before posting a 296 in the afternoon.
 
UTSA is five shots ahead of Abilene Christian (+12) and six in front of Louisiana Tech (+13), while sitting two strokes behind Middle Tennessee (+5) in the 14-team field led by host SMU (-16).
 
Rome opened the 54-hole tournament with a 3-under 68 on Monday morning. The Austin Westlake High School product wrote down four birdies, including three as part of a 3-under 33 on the front nine, en route to his second sub-70 round of his senior season. He posted three more birdies during a 73 in the afternoon.
 
Hunter Bott is in a tie for 29th at 2-over 144 after firing a pair of 72s. The Montgomery native's opening day featured a team-high eight total birdies, including five in the second round.
 
Christian Fanfelle has a share of 39th at 4-over 146. The all-conference performer from San Antonio matched Rome with a 68 in the first round on the strength of five birdies with three coming on consecutive holes on the front side. He had a 78 in the afternoon.
 
David Harrison also tied for 44th with a 71-76—147 and Jack Wehman is 48th (73-75—148) to round out the UTSA lineup, while Reed Foster is tied for 39th (71-75—146) while competing as an individual.
 
The final round is slated for Tuesday and the Roadrunners will tee off from No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m.
