Roadrunners set for UTRGV South Padre Island Classic

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team is traveling south to compete in the UTRGV South Padre Island Classic Dec. 17-18.
 
The Roadrunners are set to play UTRGV at 6 p.m. on Friday and Grand Canyon Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
Recapping Dartmouth
The Roadrunners take a trip to the coast after a 49-39 win over Dartmouth on Dec. 13. This win marks the second victory for first year head coach Karen Aston. A jumper from Yuliyana Valcheva gave UTSA a 20-19 lead in the second that the Roadrunners did not relinquish.
 
Queen Ulabo led the offense with 15 points, five rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks. Jadyn Pimentel contributed 10 points, five steals and a pair of assists. LaPraisjah Johnson chipped in a team-high nine boards.
 
Scouting URTGV
The Vaqueros come to the matchup 4-5 after a 52-43 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at the South Texas Showdown on Dec. 14. UTRGV is on a 3-0 win streak.
 
Sara Bershers leads the Vaqueros scoring with 139 points, averaging 17.4 per game. She also holds the team-leading 13 steals this season and seven blocked shots. Taylor Muff leads the play in the paint with 65 rebounds this season, averaging 7.2 per game.
 
Scouting Grand Canyon
The Antelopes face the Roadrunners after a matchup against Liberty Friday at 2 p.m. Grand Canyon comes to the Classic after a 108-77 loss to Northern Arizona.
 
Jay McChristine holds the team-leading scoring rank with 88 this season. She leads the Antelopes in rebounds with 51 and 19 steals. Taylor Caldwell fuels the Grand Canyon offense with a team-high 18 assists this season, averaging 2.3 per game.
 
Last Meeting
Against UTRGV: This is the 31st meeting between the Roadrunners and the Vaqueros. UTSA leads the series 20-9. UTRGV is on a two-game win streak after a 60-50 win on Nov. 20, 2020.
 
Against Grand Canyon: This faceoff marks the first meeting for the two teams in program history.
