SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will continue indoor season competition this Friday-Saturday, Jan. 28-29, at the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational at Yeoman Fieldhouse.
The two-day meet will get underway with field events at 2 p.m. Friday followed by running events starting at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, action is slated to start at noon in the field and 3 p.m. on the track.
The Roadrunners will line up against athletes from Georgia State, Houston, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Prairie View A&M, Rice, Sam Houston, Southern, Texas Southern and UTRGV.
After two consecutive weeks of competing in College Station, UTSA will make its first trip of the year to the Bayou City.
The jumpers highlighted action at the Texas Aggie Invitational last Saturday, as Christiaan Le Roux and Jemuel Miller swept the horizontal jumps for the men and Ingeborg Gruenwald broke a 16-year-old school record in the long jump to lead the way for the women.
Le Roux posted the first win of his young UTSA career in the long jump, as the sophomore from South Africa leaped 7.18 meters (23-6.75) for the victory ahead of Houston Baptist's Isaiah Cash (7.09m).
Miller won the triple jump for the second straight week to remain undefeated in his specialty, as the freshman from Barbados skipped to a mark of 15.32m (50-3.25) on his first attempt of the afternoon to finish comfortably in front of Northwestern State's Andrew Gilreath (14.80m).
Gruenwald posted an indoor personal-best mark of 6.22m (20-5) to finish second in the long jump and break Morgan Moszee's previous UTSA standard of 6.20m set at the 2006 Southland Conference Indoor Championships. Her league-leading jump puts her 10th on the current NCAA Indoor qualifying list and it earned her Conference USA Indoor Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second straight week.
Meanwhile, the duo of Dennis Phillips and Jose Garcia headlined action on the track at the Texas Aggie Invitational. Phillips, a transfer from TCU, sped to a time of 21.29 seconds to finish third in the 200 meters and move into second place on UTSA's all-time performers list. Garcia, the 2021 Class 6A state champion in the 100m, was close behind in fourth with a 21.34 clocking that places him fourth on the all-time performers chart.
In the relays, the quartet of Creshaun Cresser, Gabriel Green, Kaylyn Landry and Elijah Frizell passed the baton to a time of 3:45.73 to finish second in the mixed 4x400m, while the women's team of Ibiso David-West, Mackenzie Grimes, Maren Wilms and Vera Chinedu placed third in the 4x4 with a time of 3:58.77.
