SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team recorded 14 hits to defeat UIW 11-5 Sunday afternoon to close out the Cardinal Invitational.
Camryn Robillard and Lauren Coerver each recorded home runs to help the Roadrunners improve to 3-7 on the season.
Erykah Guerrero opened the second with a double to the right field wall to reach scoring position. She then advanced to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Emily Johnson earned a walk and Coerver followed with a single over the short stop as Guerrero scored to lead 1-0. In the bottom of the frame, a double play by Robillard, Kat Ibarra and Riley Grunberg, plus a popup ended the inning.
In the third, Robillard hit a solo home run to the scoreboard as the Roadrunners led 2-0. Grunberg and Guerrero recorded back-to-back singles and Emily Dear followed with another single as Grunberg reached home to push the lead to three. With runners on first and second, Marena Estell singled down the right line as Guerrero reached home (4-0).
UTSA scored three more runs in the fifth to extend the lead. With two outs, Lauren Coerver hit a solo home run over the left field wall to help the Roadrunners lead 5-0. Sophie Campbell recorded her first career hit with a single to right field and Ibarra followed with another single as runners advanced. Robillard doubled to center field as Campbell and Ibarra scored to lead 7-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Cardinals scored a run as UTSA led 7-1.
In the sixth, Emily Dear reached on an error and Kaitlyn Morado earned a walk. With two outs, Campbell hit a double to right field as runners advanced and Dear scored (8-1).Four consecutive walks from Ibarra, Robillard, Grunberg and Caylee Driskill added three more runs as the Roadrunners led 11-1. In the bottom of the frame, the Cardinals hit a solo home run and a three-run homer to score four runs and bridge the gap to six, 11-5.
Tatum Seith made the start and Jamie Gilbert, Kloey Harlson and Alexa Williams all made appearances for UTSA in the circle.
The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday at the Texas Classic where they will face Texas State at 4 p.m. and Texas at 6:30 p.m.
