Roadrunners fall to ranked Arizona State and Texas on Sunday

AUSTIN – The UTSA softball team opened the Texas Classic 0-2 after being defeated by No. 22 Arizona State 7-4 and No. 23 Texas 8-0.
 
Game one: Arizona State
The Sun Devils were on the board early with three in the second from two hits and an error.
 
The Roadrunners tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth. Camryn Robillard opened with a walk. Riley Grunberg reached on a fielder's choice as Robillard advanced to second to reach scoring position. With two outs, Marena Estell doubled to right field as Grunberg and Robillard scored to trail 3-2. Lauren Coerver singled to left field as Estell advanced to third and scored on an error to tie the game 3-3.
 
In the sixth, Arizona State hit back-to-back doubles to score two more runs to lead 6-4.
 
Both teams scored a run in the seventh. In the top of the frame, the Sun Devils reached home on a hit and an error to lead 7-3. When UTSA came up to bat, Grunberg singled with two outs on the board. Erykah Guerrero singled to left and Grunberg advanced to scoring position. Emily Dear followed with another single as Grunberg scored ands the Roadrunners trailed 7-4. A strikeout ended the game.
 
Jamie Gilbert pitched 5.1 innings, recording three strikeouts. Estell came in and pitched 1.2 innings to close out the game.
 
UTSA recorded eight hits on the day, including a double from Estell.
 
Game two: Texas
The Longhorns scored early to take the lead with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.
 
In the bottom of the third, Texas scored another run on a solo homer to lead 5-0.
 
A run the in fifth extended the lead to six for the Longhorns.
 
In the sixth, Texas scored two more runs from a hit and an error to lead 8-0 and clinch the game.
 
Three Roadrunner pitchers made appearances. Alex Williams earned the start, pitching 1.0 innings. Estell followed with an inning and Gilbert closed out the game, pitching the final three innings with two strikeouts.
 
UTSA returns to action tomorrow with a game against Tulsa at 11 a.m. to finish the Texas Classic.
