EL PASO, Texas – The UTSA softball team recorded 11 hits to defeat UTEP 9-1 in five innings to claim the series on Sunday at the Helen of Troy SBC.
The Roadrunners were on the board early with runs in the first. Kat Ibarra opened the game with a single to left field. With one out, Riley Grunberg earned a walk and Marena Estell followed with a single as runners advanced and Ibarra scored to lead 1-0. Sophie Campbell grounded out to the shortstop as Grunberg reached home (2-0).
In the second, UTSA added five more runs to the board. Erykah Guerrero earned a walk and freshman Emily Dear doubled down the left line. Kaitlyn Morado reached on a fielder's choice as Guerrero was tagged out at home. Ibarra followed with a double to center field as Dear reached home to lead 3-0. With runners on first and third, Camryn Robillard singled down the left line as Morado and Ibarra scored to lead by five. Grunberg followed with a single as Robillard reach third. In her second at bat, Estell hit a sac fly to score Robillard and lead 6-0. Closing out the top of the frame, Campbell doubled to right center as Grunberg scored as UTSA led 7-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Miners managed to load the bases, but a double play ended the inning.
The Roadrunners tacked on two more in the third. Guerrero opened with a single down the left line. With one out and one on, Morado homered to left center to score Guerrero and lead 9-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Miners scored on a wild pitch.
Alexa Williams earned the start, pitched four inning with two strikeouts. Jamie Gilbert came in for the final inning and recorded one strikeout.
UTSA recorded one more home run for a total of eight against the Miners.
The Roadrunners return to the field on Tuesday at Texas State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
