UTSA to head to Houston for J. Fred Duckett Twilight

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will make the drive east along I-10 to Houston to compete in the J. Fred Duckett Twilight, which will be hosted by Rice on Saturday, April 23, at Wendel D. Ley Track.

The meet will get underway at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw and men's discus with the remaining field events beginning at noon. The running events will be held in two sessions with the afternoon races slated for 2:30 p.m. and the evening events starting at 6 p.m.

UTSA competed in three different meets on the West Coast last week in California.

At the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Danielle Spence headlined UTSA action with the longest triple jump under any conditions in program history. The senior All-American and school record holder skipped to a second-place mark of 13.51 meters (44-4) that was aided by a 4.1 meters-per-second tailwind, disqualifying it from records and NCAA qualifying.

For the men, Bashiru Abdullahi sped to the fastest 110-meter hurdles time in the conference this season with a wind-aided 13.65 clocking in the prelims before placing fifth in the final in 13.83. All-American Jemuel Miller finished fourth among collegians in the Elite Division of the triple jump with a 15.73m (51-7.25) measurement, while Grant Szalek was fourth in the University/College Division with a leap of 15.45m (50-8.25).

Alanah Yukich moved to the top of the C-USA descending order list in the women's 400m hurdles with a runner-up time of 58.10 seconds at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, while Abby Balli also secured a second-place finish at that meet with a personal-best clocking of 4:33.26. Lacee Barnes, who competed in four total throwing competitions in both meets, placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 15.49m (50-10).

At last year's J. Fred Duckett Twilight, Yukich was the top collegiate finisher in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.57, and the Perth, Australia, product earned C-USA Track Athlete of the Week honors for her performance.
