SAN ANTONIO – A walk-off home run from Marena Estell helped UTSA defeat North Texas 8-7 Friday night in game one of the series at Roadrunner field.
North Texas was on the board early with three runs in the top of the second from a solo homer, a single and a sac fly.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the third. Lauren Coerver opened with a double to right field. Ciarra Mata was hit by a pitch to make it to first. With one out, Camryn Robillard doubled up the middle as Coerver scored to trail 3-1. Riley Grunberg earned a walk to load the bases. With two outs on the board, Emily Dear doubled up the middle as Robillard and Mata reached home to tie the game 3-3.
In the fourth, the Mean Green added two more runs to regain the lead (6-3). In the bottom of the frame, Coerver hit a solo homer to left field as UTSA trailed 6-4.
North Texas a run in the top of the fifth and the top of the sixth to extend the lead to three (7-4).
In the bottom of the seventh, Mata opened with a single to second. With an out on the board, Robillard singled to left as runners advanced. Riley Grunberg stepped up and smacked the ball over the center field wall for a three-run homer to tie the game 7-7. Estell followed with a bomb to right field to clinch the game.
Estell started the game, pitching on inning. Tatum Seith came in for 3.1 inning and reorded two strikeouts. Alexa Williams closed the game and garnered the win, pitching 2.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
UTSA posted seven hits on the day with Robillard and Coerver leading with two each.
The Roadrunners and the Mean Green return to the field tomorrow for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
