SAN ANTONIO — Ingeborg Gruenwald, Christiaan Le Roux and Grant Szalek all collected medals to highlight Saturday action for UTSA at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Park West Athletics Complex.
Gruenwald and Le Roux each secured silver in the long jumps, while Szalek captured the bronze in the men's high jump to push the Roadrunners' medal count to six through 14 combined events.
Gruenwald earned her sixth career conference podium finish with a runner-up showing in the long jump. The Salzburg, Austria, native leaped to a mark of 6.37 meters (20-10.75) to win her second straight silver medal in the C-USA Outdoor long jump. After fouling on her first two attempts, the second-team All-American measured 6.09m (19-11.75) to grab a spot in the final. She then posted her best jump of the day on her fourth trip down the runway to take the lead before a pair of fouls, only to see Middle Tennessee's Esther Isa grab the gold on her final try with a 6.39m (20-11.75) effort.
UTSA scored 11 points in the long jump, as Oreoluwa Adamson was seventh with a wind-aided mark of 5.98m (19-7.5) and Sigrid Kleive was eighth (5.97m/19-7).
On the men's side, Le Roux picked up his second league medal with a wind-aided leap of 7.77m (25-6), the best mark under any conditions of his career. The sophomore from South Africa also had a wind-legal 7.73m (25-4.5) measurement that came on his third attempt and put him atop the leaderboard. He dropped to second after Middle Tennessee's Benjamin Onyekwelu jumped 7.82m (25-8) to his 7.77m effort in the fifth round, but he ended up with a silver to go along with his bronze from the 2022 C-USA Indoor.
Jemuel Miller added four points with a fifth-place finish in the long jump, leaping to a wind-aided and season-best mark of 7.52m (24-8.25).
Meanwhile, Grant Szalek turned in a career performance in the high jump to reel in his sixth career league medal. The senior from Perth, Australia, cleared a career-best height of 2.14m (7-0.25) for third place behind a pair of jumpers who both cleared 2.17m (7-1.5). He sailed over the bar on his first three heights, including a 2.08m clearance. He then missed on his first try at 2.11m before passing to 2.14m, which he cleared on his second jump to set a new PB. Szalek bowed out at 2.17m but not before nearly clearing the bar on his final two attempts.
In other finals action in the field, Lacee Barnes placed sixth in the women's discus with a throw of 46.99m (154-2), while Jonathan Barraza cleared 4.58m (15-0.25) to also finish sixth in the men's pole vault.
In the team standings, the UTSA men are in third place with 36 points through eight events, trailing Rice (93) and Charlotte (75.5). The women are third with 28 points through six events behind Rice (37) and Charlotte (31).
In preliminary action on the track, the men and women each will send nine into Sunday's finals.
Diego Pettorossi and Dennis Phillips both stayed alive in the sprints. Pettorossi cruised to victory in his 200 meters prelim heat with a season-best time of 20.61 seconds, the fastest time of the day. The senior from Italy also clocked a season best-tying 10.36 to advance in the 100m along with Phillips, who stopped the watch in season-best times of 10.49 in the 100m and 21.30 in the deuce.
Trevion McCalla also moved on in the 200m with a time of 21.34, while the duo of Mike Roth and Logan Masters earned spots in the 400m final after posting times of 48.47 and 48.89, respectively.
The hurdles tandem Bashiru Abdullahi and Gabriel Green advanced to Sunday. Abdullahi, the C-USA Indoor 60m hurdles champion this year, sped to a 13.76 clocking to win his 110m hurdles prelim heat, while Green smashed his PB with a 52.77 for the fourth-fastest prelim time in the 400m hurdles.
For the women, Alanah Yukich is moving on in both hurdles races. The Perth, Australia, native clocked a personal-best time of 13.74 to win her preliminary heat of the 100m hurdles. The reigning C-USA 400m hurdles silver medalist also stayed alive in that event with a 59.81 clocking to cross first in her heat, just ahead of teammate Mackenzie Grimes, who posted a season-best time of 1:00.11.
Thennelle Williams is advancing in a pair of sprints, as the freshman from Jamaica won her 100m heat in 11.71 and also crossed first in the 200m in 23.95.
A pair of Roadrunners kept their medal hopes alive in the 400m. Marie Duvigneau had the fourth-fastest time with a 55.33 and Creshaun Cresser was close behind with a personal best 55.87 clocking.
UTSA also pushed through two runners in the middle distances. Brooke Lomax earned a spot in Sunday's 800m final after clocking a career-best time of 2:11.53, while Abby Balli advanced in the 1,500m with a time of 4:42.04.
The meet will wrap up on Sunday with field events starting at 1 p.m. and running finals slated for a 6 p.m. start. Live video will be available at https://conferenceusa.com/watch/default.aspx?Live=17147&path=conf.
