EUGENE, Ore. — UTSA senior Danielle Spence earned second-team All-America honors with a 14th-place finish in the women's triple jump on a rainy Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
Spence skipped to a mark of 13.00 meters (42-8) to place 14th in the 24-person field, securing the second All-American certificate of her career and becoming the first Roadrunner to own two such honors in the women's triple jump
The Kingston, Jamaica, native opened the day with a measurement of 12.69m (41-7.75) before registering her top jump of the afternoon on her second trip down the runway. She broke the sand at a distance of 12.93m (42-5.25) in the third round to conclude the 2022 campaign for the Roadrunners. Her best mark put her just ahead of Missouri's Mara Haeusler (12.94m) and TCU's Grace Aningbata (12.92m) in the competition won by Florida's Jasmine Moore with a leap of 14.32m (46-11.75).
The school record holder at 13.42m (44-0.5) outdoors and 13.37m (43-10.5) indoors earned a spot in the national championships for the second time in her career with a ninth-place jump of 13.41m (44-0) at the West Preliminary on May 28. The nine-time conference medalist collected second-team All-America honors after finishing 13th in the triple jump with a 12.80m (42-0) measurement at the 2019 NCAA Indoor in Birmingham, Alabama.
Following Spence's performance today, 13 Roadrunners now have combined to collect 17 All-America certificates on the women's side. Starlite Williams, who placed eighth at the 1985 NCAA Outdoor to become the first UTSA All-American in any sport, is the only other female Roadrunner to earn All-America accolades in the triple jump.
A trio of UTSA men earned All-America accolades earlier this week.
Jemuel Miller finished 10th in the triple jump with a mark of 16.01 meters (52-6.5) for second-team honors on Friday. The freshman from Barbados was a first-team All-American after placing sixth at the NCAA Indoor in March, becoming the first Roadrunner to achieve that status in the triple jump twice in the same year.
Two days earlier, junior Bashiru Abdullahi picked up second-team honors with a 15th-place showing in the semifinal round of the 110-meter hurdles after he clocked a time of 13.69 seconds, while sophomore Christiaan Le Roux collected his first career All-America certificate with a 22nd-place effort in the long jump after he leaped 7.31 meters (23-11.75).
Following Friday's action, the UTSA men now boast 19 All-Americans who have combined to collect 30 first team, second team or honorable mention certificates.
