UTSA earns first win in dominating fashion over Texas Southern

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA's soccer program picked up its first win of the 2022 campaign on Sunday, easily defeating Texas Southern 7-0. The Roadrunners shut out their opponent for the second straight game.

Alissa Stewart got the scoring started for the Roadrunners, as in the eleventh minute, Stewart cashed in off a brilliant double assist that left the goalkeeper out of position and UTSA took a 1-0 lead. Kendall Kloza struck the ball ahead to Anna Sutter who was able to cross it to Stewart for the goal. The first-half scoring didn't end there for the Roadrunners, as they would go on to punch in three more goals before half.

Five minutes after Stewart's score, Kiran Singh joined the party as her left-footed shot found the back right of the net, putting the Roadrunners up a pair.

Isa Hernandez also picked up her first goal of the season in the 21st minute, as the senior captain netted the Roadrunners' third goal of the game off a double assist from Singh and Sabrina Hillyer.

In the 25th minute, Stewart found the back of the net again, scoring her second goal of the day and putting UTSA up 4-0. The Roadrunners would hold serve at 4-0 as the two teams entered the break. At the half, UTSA held a 20-1 shot advantage and starting goalkeeper had a save to her name.

UTSA began the second half of action with a bang, as the Roadrunner punched in two goals within the first three minutes of action. First off, Abby Kassal converted off assists from both Hernandez and Singh. Then, not even a minute later, Sutter scored her first goal of the game thanks to an Abby Kassal pass and the Roadrunners found themselves up 6-0.

The Tigers' defense tightened up following the two quick goals as TSU goalkeeper Jaidyn Christophe sat at eight saves. However, UTSA was able to break through the Texas Southern defenses one more time in the 77th minute as Marlee Fray tallied the Roadrunners' seventh and final goal of the day.

As mentioned earlier, UTSA goalkeepers Jil Schneider and Mia Krusinski combined to shut out an opponent for the second straight game to start the year.
