Roadrunners Hit The Road for First Road Contest of 2022 Season

SAN ANTONIO – After going undefeated in their first week of play at home, UTSA heads to Texas A&M-Commerce (0-2) for its first road contest of the 2022 campaign on Thursday night. The Thursday match between the Roadrunners and Lions is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT) at Lion Soccer Field and will be streamed on ESPN+. 

UTSA is coming off a dominating 7-0 win over Texas Southern on August 21 at the Park West Athletics Complex. The Roadrunners were aggressive on the pitch, keeping possession of the ball through most of the match. Through the 90 minutes, the Roadrunners outshot the Tigers by 39 shots to one.  

Six different Roadrunners scored seven goals in the contest, including two from Alissa Stewart and one from each of Kiran Singh, Isa Hernandez, Abby Kassal, Anna Sutter and Marlee Fray. The shutout was UTSA's second in a row and its fourth in the last six contests (dating back to last season). 

The Roadrunners have remained undefeated through 180 minutes of play. In its season opener against Houston Baptist, UTSA pulled out a 0-0 draw with the Huskies despite dominance by the Roadrunners' offense, who outshot the Huskies by 27 shots to seven. The Roadrunners hold a 1-0-1 record to start the season.  

LEADING THE ROADRUNNERS 

Four different Roadrunners have earned four points apiece – Alissa Stewart (two goals), Abby Kassal (one goal, two assists), Kiran Singh (one goal, two assists), and Anna Sutter (one goal, two assists).  

Conference USA Preseason Team member Sutter is second in the conference for most shots with 10 on the season. Kassal is right behind her with eight shots, including three on goal. With six shots (two on target), Stewart has an impressive .333 shot percentage as two of six shots have resulted in a goal.  

The Roadrunner defense has kept the opposition to limited opportunities in the box, headed by Deja Sandoval, Sasjah Dade, Kendall Kloza and Sabrina Hillyer who have the most minutes played on the pitch. Goalkeepers Jil Schneider and Mia Krusinski have tabbed two saves each, splitting time evenly in goal.  

SERIES HISTORY 

This will be the first time UTSA and Texas A&M-Commerce go head-to-head. This year is the Lions' first year as an NCAA Division I program, joining the Southland Conference in the transition.  

SCOUTING THE LIONS 

In their first season as a DI program, Texas A&M-Commerce heads into its third match with a 0-2 record. The Lions opened their season with a 4-0 loss to Oral Roberts on Aug. 18, before falling 3-0 to ULM on Aug. 21. 

Through the first two matches, Ashley Campuzano leads the Lions with six shots (a pair on goal) while playing in all 180 minutes of the early season. Mya Mitchell has a .800 shot on goal percentage as four of her five total shots have been on target.  

In goal, two Lions goalkeepers have split duties and racked up 19 total saves. Texas A&M-Commerce was tabbed to finish eighth out of nine in the Southland Conference preseason coaches' poll. 

UP NEXT: The Roadrunners return home to host Kansas State on Sunday, August 28. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. (CT) at Park West Athletics Complex.
