UTSA posts pair of top-five finishes at Texas A&M Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The UTSA men's and women's cross country teams each finished fifth at the Texas A&M Invitational on Friday morning at Dale Watts Cross Country Course.
 
In the first race of the day, Madi Henry and Abby Balli placed in the top 30 collegiate runners to help lead the UTSA women to fifth place in the 10-team field. The Roadrunners tallied 167 points to finish just behind Little Rock (138) and ahead of St. Edward's (179), Tarleton State (195), North Texas (203), Texas State (242) and Prairie View A&M (311).
 
Meanwhile, Colton Stunkard finished 20th to guide the UTSA men to fifth place with 105 points, ahead of North Texas (139), TCU (152), Texas State (230) and Prairie View A&M.
 
Henry, a senior transfer who hails from New Braunfels, led the women by finishing 28th overall and 26th among collegians, covering the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:15.1. 
 
Balli, a native of Pasadena, was close behind in 33rd overall and 28th among collegiate runners with a time of 19:26.1.
 
Chante Dixon was 44th overall and 36th out of the collegiate competitors, clocking a time of 19:51.5, while Brooke Veltman was close behind in 43rd (20:07.4) and Savannah Lopez was 54th (20:48.0) to close out the top five Roadrunners.
 
Texas A&M (29) beat out TCU (46) and Rice (56) for the team title in the women's competition.
 
Stunkard, a transfer from Sam Houston who hails from Texas City, covered the men's 8k loop in a time of 25:14.6 to pace the Roadrunners in their second meet of the season.
 
Jake Smith clocked a 25:24.1 as the second Roadrunner to cross the finish line, placing 26th overall and 25th among collegians.
 
Caden Cunningham and Harrison Wade finished 27th (25:29.6) and 29th (25:38.4), respectively, while JD Corona was 38th (26:14.6) to round out the top five UTSA finishers.
 
The Aggies also claimed the men's team crown with 17 points, followed by Tarleton State (94), Little Rock (97) and St. Edward's (98).
 
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the UIW Invitational.
