Multiple Roadrunners earn wins at Roadrunner Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – Five different Roadrunners earned victories in their respective draws this weekend in the second annual Jauer Roadrunner Invitational held at the UTSA Tennis Center.

Senior Andrew Keene wrapped up the final day of tournament action by winning the G division of the singles draw Sunday morning over Noah DeLuna of UIW (6-2, 7-5). Keene was not alone as four other Roadrunners claimed victory over the weekend.

Newcomer Alan Magadan and standout Sebastian Rodriguez finished first in the A division of the doubles draw, defeating Abilene Christian (6-2) in the finals. Danijal Muminovic and Miguel Alonso also teamed up to finish in first place, claiming the title in the D section of the doubles draw. Muminovic and Alonso defeated UIW (6-1) in the championship match. Also playing well in the doubles matches was the pairing of Garrett Skelly and Keene. The two Roadrunner veterans progressed all the way to the finals where they lost 6-4.

Coach Avdeyev said, "We are happy with our doubles progress winning two doubles draws. We need to continue to improve our style of play in singles. We are looking forward to the rest of the fall where we will be making more progress."

In the A pool of the singles draw, Magadan finished with a third-place finish, losing to eventual pool-champion Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi of Baylor who is ranked 108 in the country. Magadan climbed through the consolation bracket to claim third place.

Rodriguez had a great showing in the B pool as he won his first two matches before falling in the championship to Marko Miladinovic of Baylor (6-4, 6-0).

The Roadrunners had two student-athletes in the C pool as both Tomás Pinho and Tiago Torres competed. The two would meet in the third-place match of the consolation bracket as Pinho won and claimed third while Torres finished fourth.

Skelly was the runner-up in the D pool, falling to Emilien Burnel of UTRGV (7-5, 6-3) while Muminovic claimed the consolation championship.

When asked about his thoughts on the tournament, coach Avdeyev said, "I am very pleased with the way our tournament went. It was only our second year hosting the Roadrunner Invite and we saw major improvements across the board. It was evident that there was an increase in the caliber of players that attended." Avdeyev continued, "It was very special for our guys to compete in front of our home crowd. We hosted a great individual fall event that we will continue to grow for future seasons."

Avdeyev continued, "Once again we would like to thank our sponsors the Jauer family and Ace Bush Outreach Program for their help. We had so much positive feedback from the players and coaches. Special thank you to my Assistant coach Cullen Dees who served as a tournament director in running this first-class event."
