DALLAS — Christian Fanfelle fired a 4-under-par 68 to settled into a tie for second place to lead the UTSA men's golf team in the first round of the Trinity Forest Invitational, which got underway Sunday at Trinity Forest Golf Club (par 72/7,372 yards).
Behind Fanfelle's 14th career sub-70 round, the Roadrunners are deadlocked with Wichita State in 11th place at 2-over 290 with 36 holes left to play. UTSA is one shot ahead of New Mexico and two in front of North Texas while sitting only one stroke out of a three-way tie for eighth between Loyola Marymount, Middle Tennessee and Sam Houston.
Fanfelle recorded five birdies on his opening-round scorecard and is part of a six-way tie for second place at 4-under, one shot behind Furman's Will Morlan, who posted a 67. The senior from San Antonio birdied the first and fifth holes as part of a 34 on the front nine and then added three more birdies against only one bogey on the back en route to his low round of the season.
David Harrison carded an even-par 72 on the strength of four birdies and an eagle on the 550-yard, par-5 10th hole. The senior from nearby Trophy Club sits in a tie for 24th place with two more rounds to play.
Making his debut in the UTSA lineup, freshman Brayden Bare registered a 1-over 73 to grab a share of 40th place. The Waco Midway High School product logged four birdies, including three in a row on Nos. 14-16, on Sunday.
Carson Gallaher and Jack Wehman each posted a 77 and are tied for 74th.
Little Rock has the day-one lead in the 17-team field after turning in a 9-under 279.
The second round is slated for Monday and the Roadrunners will be paired with Loyola Marymount and Wichita State with tee times off No. 10 beginning at 8:35 a.m.
