Wehman headlines day-one action at Saint Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Jack Wehman posted an even-par scorecard to headline action for the UTSA men's golf team on the first day of the Saint Mary's Invitational, which teed off Monday at Poppy Hills Golf Course (par 71/7,091 yards).
 
Wehman registered three birdies en route to turning in a 71 and help lead the Roadrunners to a 295 in the first round of the 54-hole event. The sophomore from Austin bounced back from a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine with a 2-under 33 on the back after he birdied three holes, including two of the three par threes on that side. He has a share of 18th place and is just two shots out of the top 10.
 
Hunter Bott and Christian Fanfelle both carded a 73 on Monday and are tied for 37th. Bott, a senior from Montgomery, recorded back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3 and also circled his number on the 515-yard 18th hole. Fanfelle, a senior from San Antonio, matched Bott and Wehman with three birdies, all as part of a 1-under 35 on the front.
 
David Harrison provided the other counting score with a 78 that was highlighted by a birdie on the 194-yard, par-3 sixth. The senior from Trophy Club is tied for 77th.
 
Brayden Bare rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 86th (81).
 
UTSA is in 12th place (+11) in the team standings, one shot ahead of Pacific (+12), three better than UC Santa Barbara (+14) and nine in front of a tie at 20-over between Grand Canyon and Sacramento State. The Roadrunners are only one stroke behind No. 39 BYU (+10) and two back of a deadlock at 9-over between Nevada and Washington State.
 
San Diego has the day-one lead at 9-under par, followed by Loyola Marymount (-7), Santa Clara (-3), Fresno State (-2) and No. 18 Colorado State (E).
 
Riley Lewis of Loyola Marymount has the individual lead after firing a 6-under 65.
 
The second round is slated for Tuesday.
