Harris named San Antonio Express-News Sportsman of the Year

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA quarterback Frank Harris has been named the 2022 San Antonio Express-News Sportsman of the Year, the publication announced on Jan. 1.

Harris' selection gives UTSA two straight award winners, as head coach Jeff Traylor was the 2021 honoree, and it marks the first time a UTSA football student-athlete has received the distinction.

The 2022 Conference USA Most Valuable Player and a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, Harris guided the Roadrunners to an 11-3 record, their second consecutive conference crown, a top-25 ranking in all three major polls and their third bowl game in a row this past season. He completed 328 of 471 passes (69.6%) for 4,063 yards and 32 TDs and a 160.7 passing efficiency, all school records, and he added 602 rushing yards — a program record for a QB — and nine scores on the ground en route to first-team all-league accolades.

A semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, Harris logged seven 300-yard passing games in 2022, including a school-record 414 in the 45-30 victory at Middle Tennessee. The Schertz Clemens High School product piled up 400-plus yards of offense three times in 2022 including a school record 423 in that road triumph over the Blue Raiders. A four-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Week this past season, he was voted the C-USA Championship Game MVP after completing 32 of 37 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 49 yards and a TD in the 48-27 win over North Texas on Dec. 2.

Harris is 31-11 as UTSA's starting quarterback, including 23-5 since 2021, and he holds more than 30 school records. He has thrown for 9,356 yards and 74 touchdowns on 816-of-1,211 passing (67.4%) during his career — all program records — and also has rushed for 1,822 yards and 24 TDs, the most in a career by a UTSA QB.
