HOUSTON — David Harrison is in the top 10 individuals and the UTSA men's golf team is in eighth place after the opening day of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, which got underway Monday at Westwood Golf Club (par 72/7,184 yards).
Harrison carded a pair of 2-under-par 70s through 36 holes to grab a share of eighth place in the individual standings and help guide the Roadrunners to a 1-under 575 (290-285).
UTSA is only one stroke behind a tie for sixth place between Rice and ULM and four shots ahead of Stephen F. Austin in the 16-team field with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday.
Opening play on No. 7 in Monday's shotgun start, Harrison bounced back from a double bogey on his second hole with 10 straight pars before recording an eagle on the 537-yard, par-5 first. He then reeled off three birdies in a row on Nos. 3-5 to help him card a 70 in the morning round.
In the afternoon, Harrison matched his opening round score on the strength of four more birdies including back-to-back on Nos. 11-12. The senior from Trophy Club is deadlocked with Rice's Jay Kirchdorfer at 4-under 140, five shots off the 9-under pace set by Sam Houston's Bret Gray (69-66—135).
Hunter Bott is part of an eight-way tie for 20th place at 1-under 143. The senior from Montgomery logged five birdies en route to a 71 in the opening round before turning in an even-par 72 in the afternoon behind two more birdies.
Jack Wehman has a share of 30th at 1-over 145. The sophomore from Austin bounced back from a 75 in the morning with a 2-under 70 that featured a trio of birdies.
Christian Fanfelle and Brayden Bare round out the UTSA lineup in 49th (74-74—148) and 58th (77-73—150), respectively.
Sam Houston leads the team race at 18-under, followed by Oral Roberts (-12), Houston (-9), Lamar (-9), and UT Arlington (-8) in the top five.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday and UTSA will be paired with Rice and SFA with tee times off No. 1 beginning at 7:39 a.m.
