HOUSTON — Led by a top-25 finish from Jack Wehman, the UTSA men's golf team placed eighth at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on Tuesday at Westwood Golf Club (par 72/7,184 yards).
Wehman fired a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to move into a tie for 22nd at even-par 216 and help the Roadrunners post a 2-over 866 (290-285-291). UTSA finished 15 strokes in front of No. 49 Southern Miss and Abilene Christian and only two shots behind ULM in the 16-team field.
Entering the final day in 30th after posting a 75-70—145 on Monday, Wehman wrote down five birdies on his scorecard to jump eight spots in the 92-man field. The sophomore ended the event with 37 pars and nine birdies and played the par threes at 2-under par.
Hunter Bott was just one shot behind his teammate in a tie for 29th at 1-over 217. The senior from Montgomery opened with a 71-72—143 before turning in a 74 on Tuesday that was highlighted by a birdie on the 584-yard, par-5 12th hole. He matched Wehman with 37 pars — the most on the team this week — and recorded eight birdies.
David Harrison finished in a tie for 31st at 2-over 218. The senior from Trophy Club carded a pair of 2-under 70s on the opening day that included an eagle on the 537-yard, par-5 first in the first round before settling for a 78 that featured two birdies in the final round.
Christian Fanfelle posted a one-shot improvement over his two 74s registered on Monday by logging a 73 on the strength of four birdies on Tuesday. The senior from San Antonio paced the Roadrunners with 11 birdies and finished in a tie for 46th at 5-over 221.
Brayden Bare closed out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 52nd with a 7-over 223, bouncing back from a 77 in the first round with back-to-back 73s.
Sam Houston captured the team title behind individual medalist Bret Gray's 11-under 205 (69-66-70).
The Roadrunners will return to action on March 13-14 at the Louisiana Classic.
