UTSA falls in pitchers duel against Saint Mary’s

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team fell to Saint Mary's, 1-0, in a true pitcher's duel on Friday night at Roadrunner Field.

Starting pitcher Luke Malone recorded six strikeouts in eight innings of work, allowing a run on four hits. Daniel Garza pitched the final inning, allowing no runs on no hits and a strikeout. Four Roadrunners had one hit each – Shane Sirdashney, Garrett Poston, Josh Killeen and Clark Henry. Antonio Valdez recorded a couple stolen bases.

The series opener between the Roadrunners and Gaels was a true pitcher's duel. There were only five hits scattered across both teams as neither team scored in the first four innings. In the fifth inning, Saint Mary's finally opened up scoring as a ground out scored a runner from third. A leaping catch by Leyton Barry prevented the Gaels from plating more in the frame.

Although the Roadrunners put a couple runners on base, they were not able to do anything with them. A fantastic across-the-diamond play by Valdez ended the Gaels' opportunities in the top of the ninth. With one more chance to score, the Roadrunners came up to bat in the bottom of the ninth. After the first batter lined out, King reached first on a dropped fly by the Gaels' first baseman. Killeen then grounded into aa double play as UTSA fell to Saint Mary's, 1-0, in the series opener on Friday night.

The Roadrunners fall to a 3-2 record to start the season, while Saint Mary's improves to a 2-4 record.
