SAN MARCOS, Texas – The UTSA softball team (3-13) wrapped up their appearance at the TXST Classic and the week on a Sunday grinder at Bobcat Softball Stadium, dropping a 3-2 rematch with Colorado State (10-5) on a sixth-inning, game-winning push by the Rams.
The Roadrunners scored first for the fourth consecutive game, but couldn't hold on as Colorado State climbed back into the game. UTSA put up it's only runs in the first inning, as transfer catcher Taylor Jensen capitalized on Lilly Hood's one-out base hit, lifting an RBI single into right field for UTSA's eighth first-inning score this season and her eighth RBI of the early season. With Marena Estell on second after earning an eight-pitch walk, sophomore first baseman Sophie Campbell extended UTSA's advantage to 2-0 with an RBI single to center field.
Shutting down the Rams in the first two frames, starter Reagan Smith ran into some trouble in the third, loading the bases with a pair of singles and a walk. A wild pitch escaped Jensen and allowed pinch runner Emma Semonich to cross the plate for a CSU run.
Smith handcuffed the Rams for the next two frames, but a pair of sixth-inning RBI doubles for Danielle Serna and Jordan West edged Colorado State in front, 3-2, and ended her stint in the circle for the day.
Entering in relief for the Roadrunners, Marena Estell sat down every batter she faced. Meanwhile, Rams reliever Sydney Hornbuckle (4-3) was thoroughly holding up her end for CSU, limiting the Roadrunners to a walk with no hits and tossing 4.1 innings to secure the 3-2 CSU win.
Taking the loss, Smith (0-5) threw 5.2 innings with seven hits and three earned runs, recording three strikeouts.
At the plate, freshman center fielder Madison Lenton was rock-steady for UTSA, going 2-for-2 with a sixth-inning walk, while Campbell and Jensen each registered one hit with an RBI.
The Roadrunners return to San Antonio briefly, heading back out on Tuesday to face Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at Chapman Field with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
