Roadrunners wrap up ICON Invitational with best round of week

HUMBLE, Texas — Paced by an even-par round from Hunter Nugent, the UTSA women's golf team wrapped up the ICON Invitational with their best team score of the week on Tuesday at the Golf Club of Houston (par 72/6,392 yards).
 
Nugent's 72 led the Roadrunners to a 6-over-par 294 in the final round, a three-shot improvement from the 297 recorded in the opening round on Monday morning.
 
Nugent posted back-to-back birdies twice on her final scorecard, logging a two on the 145-yard, par-3 seventh a four on the 522-yard, par-5 eighth holes on the front side and then registering a three on the 295-yard, par-4 13th and a four on the 478-yard, par-5 14th as part of a 1-under 35 on the back. The senior from Canada led UTSA with nine birdies and finished the event in a tie for 78th at 11-over 227 after opening with a 75-80—155 on Monday.
 
Camryn Carreon turned in a 1-over 73 on the strength of birdies on Nos. 11-12 for UTSA's second-best score of the day. The senior from San Antonio ended up with eight birdies and a share of 74th at 10-over 226 after posting a 73-80—153 on the opening day.
 
Olivia Williams also finished in a tie for 74th at 10-over 226 after the freshman from England logged her second straight 75, this one highlighted by a birdie on the 299-yard, par-4 10th.
 
Morgan Ellison joined Nugent as part of the tie for 78th at 11-over 227. The sophomore out of Georgia opened with a 73 and then bounced back from an 80 in round two with a 74 on Tuesday that featured birdies on Nos. 1 and 13.
 
Daniela Abonce rounded out the UTSA lineup in 87th after turning in three 77s for the week.
 
UTSA finished 16th with a 903 (297-312-294) in the field that included a dozen ranked teams.
 
No. 10 Texas A&M claimed the team title with a 34-under 830 behind individual champion Zoe Slaughter's 18-under 198 (65-65-68).
 
The Roadrunners will be back in action on March 6-7 when they travel to Dallas for the Trinity Forest Invitational.
