SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men's tennis team opened up its home slate of the 2023 season with a victory, downing New Orleans 5-2 on Friday afternoon.
The Roadrunners (1-2) struggled early in doubles play, dropping all three contests to the Privateers as New Orleans claimed a 1-0 lead. The Privateers (1-1) dropped their first match of the year, having come into the day undefeated, defeating North Alabama in their spring opener.
Doubles
The doubles action began the Friday competition and the first matchup featured New Orleans's Max Heinzel/Luke Joujan against UTSA's Jackson Ross/Tiago Torres. Heinzel and Joujantook the match, winning 6-4. The next doubles match featured Matthew Armbruster/Karim Al-Amin from UNO going up against Garrett Skelly/Tomás Pinho. Again, New Orleans pulled out the doubles victory, winning 77-65. The final doubles match featured Marcel Volz/Espen Lagarde against UTSA's sixth-ranked pair of Alan Magadan/Sebastian Rodriguez. For the second straight doubles matchup, the two teams saw their pair of student-athletes go to a tiebreaker as New Orleans came away with the victory, winning 77-64. UTSA will look to claim its first doubles victory on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara.
Singles
Following doubles action, the six singles matchups began. UTSA scored five points, winning five of the six matchups to earn its first dual victory of the season. The first match to finish featured Danijal Muminovic defeating Lilian Dubois (6-2, 6-2). Mumoinovic's win scored the Roadrunners their first points of the year. Within a few minutes of Muminovic's match coming to an end, Pinho downed UNO's Lagarde by the same score (6-2, 6-2) to put the Roadrunners up 2-1. In the third singles matchup, Torres bested Volz (6-3, 6-1) while Ross downed Armbruster (6-2, 6-2) to give UTSA a 4-1 lead and secure the dual victory. The two teams played out the remaining singles matchups which featured UNO's Al-Amin defeating Magadan (65-77, 6-3, 10-1), securing UNO's second point, and Rodriguez beating Heinzel (6-7, 6-3, 12-10).

UTSA will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 5, as it welcomes UC Santa Barbara to the UTSA Tennis Center. Sunday morning's match will begin at 11 a.m. to wrap up its home-opening weekend matches.
